Quite a Challenge
1 Corinthians 11:1 has long been one of the most challenging verses in the Bible for me. Its message is actually short and simple: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” However, in these few words, the Apostle Paul issues a challenge that hits on several levels.
First of all, he rightfully places Christ as the prime example for each one of us. Living up to His example is a daily challenge. In fact, every moment of every day we are challenged to live up to His example. When we fail, we confess. When we succeed, we give Him the glory.
Second, Paul sets himself up as an example for us to follow. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote this challenge nearly 2,000 years ago. We read it today, and are still challenged to follow his example. We can read of his faithfulness, boldness, tenacity, and faith throughout the pages of Scripture. He faced death several times because of his love for Christ. Again, that is quite a challenge to follow.
The last challenge is the most humbling of all. I should be able to issue the same challenge that Paul did to anyone I speak to: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” The only way I can honestly share this challenge with others is if I am fulfilling this challenge on my own as well.
1 Corinthians 11:1 is one of many Scriptures that issues a life-long challenge. May we never give up following the example of Christ. After all, others are watching us, and are following our example.
